June marks National Indigenous History Month, with a particular date focus on June 21, 2020 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Heritage Mississauga would like to encourage Canadians to celebrate and learn more about the cultural identity and diversity of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples.

As the source for heritage in Mississauga, we are pleased to provide resources and videos to help you explore indigenous heritage.

VIDEO: Join Faith Rivers, Director of The Indigenous Programs Committee of Heritage Mississauga as she teaches various Anishinaabemowin greetings and phrases in our Cultural Exploration Classroom.

In addition, the City of Toronto presents a virtual celebration for National Indigenous Peoples Day.

This year’s program includes:

• Prayer from Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, including offering of medicines (smudging)
• Water ceremony and song, followed by a berry teaching, with Kim Wheatley, Anishinaabe Grandmother, Turtle Clan and Traditional Ancestral Knowledge Keeper from Shawanaga First Nation
• Welcome from Chief Stacey Laforme of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
• Messages from Mayor John Tory and Councillor Mike Layton, member of the Aboriginal Affairs Advisory Committee
• Big Drum Honour Song performed by the Black Bull Moose Singers, a traditional Indigenous singing group of the Anishnawbe and Oneida First Nations
