Welcome to our 57th installment of “Ask a Historian”.

Join Historian Matthew Wilkinson for our next episode of “Ask A Historian” on July 15, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. on our YouTube channel.

This week Matthew welcomes Omar El Sharkawy, Educational Resource Assistant at Heritage Mississauga, as they discuss the research, process, and discoveries of the project which Omar embarked upon to identify historic colonial figures and events and investigate their connections to street names in Mississauga

Omar El Sharkawy is a recent graduate of the history program at the University of Toronto. His interests are in the histories and historiographies of the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and world revolutions, with particular attention to themes of decolonization.

The project began in late 2020 and ran until April of 2021 under the oversight of Historian Matthew Wilkinson. The research has been compiled into a five-part series of articles that will be featured during our Way Back Wednesday series in partnership with Modern Mississauga.

#ApartTogther we continue to research the fascinating history of our city.

You are invited to email us questions you have about Mississauga and we encourage you to send a short (less than 1 minute) MP4 video of your question, which we may feature in one of our “Ask a Historian” videos.

Any questions not featured in our videos will receive a written response from Matthew.

We would also love to feature questions from young Mississauga residents who are curious about their city and will feature a dedicated video to these inquisitive kids.
