Join Historian Matthew Wilkinson today for a special Saturday Matinee presentation in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day as Matthew explores the story of Irish immigration and settlement in historic Mississauga.

Many Irish families came to settle in historic Mississauga and they faced challenges with the landscape, barriers to land ownership, and religous persecution.

Irish communities were formed, including the area referred to as “the Catholic Swamp”, so named because of the concentration of Irish Catholic families who settled here in the 1820s and 1830s.

Explore the historic Irish families who came to Mississauga and their contributions that can still be seen on the landscape of Mississauga today.

#ApartTogether we celebrate the Irish history and culture that remains in Mississauga.

You are invited to email us questions you have about Mississauga and we encourage you to send a short (less than 1 minute) MP4 video of your question, which we may feature in one of our “Ask a Historian” videos.

Any questions not featured in our videos will receive a written response from Matthew.

We would also love to feature questions from young Mississauga residents who are curious about their city and will feature a dedicated video to these inquisitive kids.
