On September 10, 1939 Canada was launched into the global spotlight as the peaceful nation declared war on Germany and entered the Second World War.
This was a pivotal and defining moment in history for Canada as our country became a critical ally in the war against levels of injustice and fascism the world had never seen before.
More than one million Canadian men and women served full-time in the armed services between 1939 and 1945 . More than 55,000 were wounded and over 43,000 were killed.
Over the months ahead we will be exploring the Second World War and looking at the causes, the milestone events, the historic battles, Canada’s role, activities on the homefront, the aftermath of the war, connections to Mississauga, and honouring those who have fallen.
We encourage you to send in any questions that you may have about Mississauga’s connections to the Second World War as we will continue to explore one of the 20th century’s most important struggles on our Ask A Historian and Saturday Matinee programs.
Remember to follow us on our social media channels for new content as we take a chronological approach to the War with newspaper articles from the war, war diaries, and correspondence from servicemembers and their families.
We invite you to journey through 1939 to 1945 to experience the history of the international conflict that put Canada on the map as a celebrated ally and formidable adversary, and left a legacy of pride and remembrance of those who served for their country and the world.
#ApartTogether we continue to research our connections and contributions in the Second World War.
