Port Credit Cenotaph 100th Anniversary: Project Overview

The 100th anniversary of the Port Credit Cenotaph marked a profound moment of reflection and community pride. Heritage Mississauga was honoured to work alongside the Port Credit Legion, the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Club, the City of Mississauga, and numerous military and community partners to recognize a century of service and sacrifice.

Honouring 100 Years of Service

The rededication ceremony formally acknowledged the Afghanistan War, supported by a new engraving on the Cenotaph and a wreath-laying by Afghanistan Veterans. The City of Mississauga also planted a commemorative red maple tree in Vimy Park, symbolizing continued remembrance for future generations.

Dignitaries from the Canadian Armed Forces, the City of Mississauga, and local community leaders joined Veterans, Cadets, First Responders, and residents in a meaningful celebration of remembrance.

Community Engagement & Education

A central goal of the project was to deepen public understanding of the conflicts represented on the Cenotaph and the individuals whose names it bears. Interactive exhibits, artifact displays, reenactment groups, and presentations by historians offered visitors a rich opportunity to explore local military history.

Families enjoyed hands-on activities, including face painting, a mini militia experience, comic books for young learners, and the chance to explore an 1812 ship replica. Local churches—St. Andrew’s Memorial Presbyterian and Trinity–St. Paul’s Anglican—continued their long tradition of participating in remembrance services connected to the Cenotaph.
