About National Indigenous Peoples Day

This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First NationsInuit and Métis peoples. The Canadian Constitution recognizes these three groups as Aboriginal peoples, also known as Indigenous peoples, that each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.

In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

Celebrate Indigenous culture, music, and tradition on June 21 at Celebration Square, including a host of exciting indigenous voices, and featuring a powerful headline performance by Tanya Tagaq – Polaris Music Prize & JUNO award-winning Inuk throat singer known for her raw, genre-defying sound.

All programming in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Some of the most dynamic Indigenous voices in Canada take the saugaLIVE Stage for an evening of powerful music and storytelling. From traditional hand drumming to genre-blending throat singing, this lineup will move you – mind, body and spirit. Returning favourites and new voices come together for a night you won’t want to miss, hosted by Indigenous youth advocate and content creator Kairyn Potts.
